After consultation with a plastic surgeon to determine if you’re eligible for the procedure the doctor will schedule tests to determine your blood cell counts and will also get a complete medical history from you. The cosmetic surgeon may be especially concerned with any medicines that you are currently taking, especially blood thinners such as aspirin. The doctor may do these test in his office or may send you to a lab to have the tests done. The reports will also be shared with the anesthesiologist so he or she knows the proper anesthesia to use for your surgery.

The doctor will expect you to begin preparing for the surgery a few weeks in advance. During this time the doctor will want you to avoid medications that are not strictly necessary. Many people claim that there is very little to no pain involved, but it is more like a soreness after the surgery. Your doctor may also use a drain to remove fluids after the surgery, which is a small tube that is inserted into the surgical site that then drains into a small bulb which is easy to empty. Both the drain and the sutures can be expected to be removed after 7-10 days. You can expect to be off of work anywhere from 1-2 weeks after your gynecomastia surgery.

It’s best that you exhaust all other means of treating your gynecomastia before you consider surgery. Diet and exercise can often help and some doctors will try hormonal therapy to reduce the gynecomastia. Even if you do opt for surgery you will need to exercise and watch your diet afterwards to prevent a reoccurrence of the gynecomastia.
